It's THE time of the year where temperatures are cooler, but it's also wetter. Welcome to Singapore, sweater weather. Rainy days can be the best excuse to skip a workout, or it can feel so nice to do light workouts in the cooling breeze, right after a good rain! This article prepares you conduct exercises outdoors in a safe and appropriate manner.

Dress Smart when you Exercise

  • Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton, as it retains water and can become heavy. Unless you're all about the weight training, it's best you keep things light and enjoyable.

  • Invest in a lightweight, water-resistant rain jacket with ventilation to protect you from getting drenched without overheating.

  • Rainy weather often comes with reduced visibility. Wear bright colours or attire with reflective elements to ensure you’re seen by drivers and cyclists. While many fitness corners are well-lit, it is important that you dress appropriately to remain visible to oncoming traffic especially at sharp bends or narrow walkways.

Protect Your Feet

  • While not always necessary, waterproof shoes or those with some water resistance can help keep your feet dry. Shoes soaked in water makes an uncomfortable wear, and are additional weight.

  • Avoid thick cotton socks. Instead, opt for moisture-wicking (and thinner) ones that dry quickly and prevent blisters. Especially if you're intending to spend long hours exercising, comfortable footwear is important.

Warm Up and Cool Down

  • Begin your warm-up indoors to avoid starting your workout with stiff, cold muscles. Remember, a quick stretch is always beneficial for your muscles.

  • Don't procrastinate! Change out of wet clothes immediately when you reach home. You can cool down and stretch in fresh clothes so as to prevent catching a cold.

Conclusion

Rain doesn’t have to dampen your fitness routine. With proper preparation, exercising in the rain can be safe, refreshing, and a lot more fun! So lace up, embrace the drizzle, and let every step remind you of the strength and determination it takes to stay active, no matter the weather.
